Use of Mind maps

I find that the use of mind maps is very useful especially when it is difficult to define a holistic picture of the topic or problem at hand. What is useful by using a mind map, it helps to kickstart the thinking process. Start with a central topic - the problem. Then identify the underlying main themes/pillars defining the topic or problem. Then you can let go with your train of thought.

If you are defining a space/domain for a specific topic, you obviously need to identify relevant and applicable categories and sub categories.

I currently use Mindmanager, a software tool to create mind maps. What is useful is that the mind map can be exported and related to a Word document with related TOC and headings. It can also be exported to MS Project or MS Powerpoint.
